I'm having a very low day and this tale of being poised on the edge of something has cheered me up no end. How exciting and terrifying and thrilling and wonderful to be starting at the very beginning. I can see you teetering in my mind's eye, I can't wait to see you fly.
If it’s a dead mouse in the wall ( or chimney) it will stop smelling in 10 days. If it’s a dead rat, 3 weeks. Very experienced with this in an hundred year old bungalow.
Get a heated wrap for when you are sitting down, essential with oil and gas so effing expensive.
Hahaha to the chiropractor what's app. I was going to ask where your gorgeous seat cover was from but ALAS, bespoke.(Maybe I could just wind a long piece of fabric around mine and hope for the best.)
I find the best place to go, in order to avoid putting the heating on in May, is bed, with extra pillows for propping the body and a very hot water bottle for feet.
Even then/now, woolly gloves without finger tips ( thank you friend who gave them as a thoughtful cold weather gardening aid) are a requirement. A nose cosy would be handy too, but I think I’d have to set about designing one of those. A challenge too far perhaps…
What a gorgeous gaff. Is there room for is all? Some of us could prop up the wonky Billy. Am concerned tho. Will the price of your morning cuppa go up when your barrister takes silk? (Guess that’ll be Kick-ass Coffee) ✨🌱🙏🏼
The warmest blanket I have found is a faux fur blanket. Mine is from John Lewis and was not cheap (it was a Christmas present from husband), but worth every penny as it’s so much warmer than any other blanket (though I’ve never tried an electric one, or a cashmere one).
I can relate to this in an uncanny way minus the covering made for the function over design chosen chair. My writing room slash photography room slash craft room slash sewing room is almost never used now because a laptop allows me to work downstairs. I miss my room upstairs. It doesn’t have the smell of a deceased something lingering but I did inadvertently find a tiny house mouse beneath a box in the closet once. Best to you on your writing (which I truly enjoy!) and consider Anne Lamott’s words when and if you need them. Ignore radio station KFKD! If you’ve never read her “Bird by Bird” on writing—it’s a classic.
Seeing the number of books reminded me of when we were moving and our bookcase was moved, Lo and behold the weight of the books had actually done damage to the wall, too late to do anything about it for the new owners as we were leaving that day. One thing about England, which is similar to Melbourne, when it is cold it is 🥶, but when the sun is shining it is lovely outside, but still 🥶inside 😄. Thanks for another delightful read.
I love your writing so much. And I can’t believe it - I bought a poppies and pinks mug three weeks ago (!) but apparently Emma herself is hand delivering it to me because I haven’t gotten it yet. I broke my very favorite bumblebee Emma mug, hence the excuse for replacement. Hopefully it will make its way across the pond soon. Stay warm! .

That carnival iris is AMAZING. I need a few.
Lapsang Souchong rocks.
Top tier experience sharing here
I always read your comments, Veronica, and I always enjoy them. So nice to have a wee community of Horticulturalist readers.
I love the way Substack is so inclusive, informative, and - just fun!

BILLY NEEDS TO GO.
BUT WHERE WILL THE BOOKS LIVE?
Have faith in yourself. You are a super wordsmith. Always always worth my time! You are following the right path for you.
Reading ‘you and life’ makes me so happy!

Best of luck with the new beginning.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 oh no!! Well, if/when she does finally arrive with it, you will be delighted I’m sure, as I am. It’s SO pretty.
I once read something to the effect of: a writer is someone for whom writing is especially difficult. Sounds true to me! Your rusty iris is stunning
Your buttons are hilarious. But lapsang?
BELIEVE 🌸 and buy some uniglo under layers!
I like your new chapter. Stay warm with your dogs. And surely books count as wall insulation?
